As we age, we begin to condition ourselves to recognize shapes, patterns, and tropes in media, with the tendency of disregarding the rest. When we see toys or animation, our minds typically associate that with media meant to be consumed by children. “Pieces” uses these preconceived notions to usurp expectations and deliver serious content through the use of stop-motion LEGO animation. By seeing simple LEGO figures, the audience may revert themselves back to simpler times, when things did not need to be complex or difficult. I can then address adult themes such as loss, doubt, and worry resulting from unresolved childhood conflict with less of a guarded or jaded perspective that often times comes from adulthood. “Pieces” follows a man grappling with these problems as they come to light in his adult life, and how both he and his wife deal with them.
