My work is based on actual incidents that took place shortly before I was born. A family tragedy that does not involve me directly but, it has influenced and affected my life and outlook on reincarnation, family ties and justice.

The story is displayed in the form of a graphic novel/comic book. The color palette is limited to black, red and white (colors that have become part of my artistic style) used to enhance the dramatic storyline that’s being told. The death of my mother’s father has much mystery and bad blood entangled within the circumstances of what happened. I attempt to retell the story from what I know and hopefully bring some awareness to what happened over 30 years ago. The situation I present to the viewers has had barely any attention or afterthought since it took place. While not 100% accurate, I used the stories I’ve heard from my family to create an interesting yet respectful account of how the “Demise of Wendell” came to be.

Critical Point Comics is a collection of comics Illustrated in black and white, with limited colors used throughout. Enlarged digital prints of the comics have been mounted on mat board and displayed to recontextualize a “low culture” art form as “fine art” through the gallery context. On the back wall additional comics will be projected from a loop throughout the evening. Finally, the comics will also be presented in a more conventional print form as a zine to make a statement about independent publishing and the root of my inspiration. .

The comics are based on autobiographical/biographical situations with a satirical commentary similar to Harvey Pekar the Writer for American Splendor comics. Robert crumb drew many of his stories and Mr. Crumb is a heavy influence on the artist’s: comics, art and respect for illustration and underground comics. Most of the comics aren’t as racy as Crumb when it comes to subject matter. Subject matter presents an understated social commentary with low brau humor and curmudgeoness combined to get the point across.
